Eli: "Where's Djibouti?"
Cam: "Right next to Ass-mara."

I have so much work it's not even funny. I can't wait for finals week, because all my papers and projects will be over by then and I'll just have tests, which at least only take a couple hours each as long as I understand the material. But until then, I'll be slaving away. This is why I hate being sick enough to miss school; when I get back there's always SO MUCH TO DO.

On the plus side, I'm SO GLAD that Statistics in Sociology is being offered as an online course for J-term. 8D I wasn't at all looking forward to taking that during spring semester, but now it's awwwwwright.

Today I walked into Spanish class for the first time in close to a month, and the general reaction was "OH MY GOD HANNAH, YOU'RE ALIVE". I was amused. (I'm also so far behind it's not even funny, buuuuuut I'm not going to dwell on that for the moment.)

I also love how this year I've gotten SO LAZY at keeping up my room. Last year I kept things pretty sparse, but neat. This year, I went all-out with the decorating, but in terms of tidiness I'm just like, "FUCK IT *uses the floor as a dresser*". Seriously.

According to my sociology textbook, the Unified Crime Report defines rape as:

"The carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will."

Because men cannot be raped, ever?

This book also goes out of its way to make it clear that children are the most likely to be arrested for crimes that only children can be arrested for. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR CLEARING THAT UP, ROBERT REGOLI.

Mr. LaForce: [reading the program notes for "Rise of the Firebird"] "The firebird, also known as the phoenix, bursts into flames and is reborn from its own ashes, stronger and more powerful than before."
Doug: "I can do that."
Mr. LaForce: "I know, wouldn't it be cool if I just burst into flames on the podium after the song?"
Maddie: "The longest recorded time of someone doing that is thirty-four seconds."
Taylor: "You mean people actually record how long it takes for someone to spontaneously combust?"
Maddie: "No, set themselves on fire."
Taylor: "People set themselves on fire?"
Maddie: "For a living."
Doug: "I do that."

They had these neat wall-decorating things at the campus store; you just stick them on, and they peel off really easily whenever you want to take them down. Impulse buys are win.

Use DailyBooth more often.

Take less pictures that look like this.

In other news, I finally picked up a fifth class, and when that's done, I'll never have to take another science Gen. Ed. again. SO. HAPPY. I really want to take an astronomy class, but all of the ones I've looked at have lab components and there's just no way. I JUST WANT TO TAKE A CLASS WHERE YOU JUST LEARN ABOUT STARS AND BLACK HOLES AND PLANETS AND SHIT, IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK? Ehhhhh.

Doug: "Speaking of forging things, Maddie, how would you like to make some money after school?"

The table tents at my school's dining halls are filled with typos and grammar mistakes. Today, I spotted the best one I've seen so far:

"Spitfire Grill is a compelling tale about a town struggling to survive, and the heroin that saves it."

UNH is promoting drug use, everybody!

Speaking of dining halls, I had these really good Asian noodles for dinner. They were good, at least, until I found an ant crawling around in them. Why does life do this to me.

stock- melted
School's starting up again on... Monday, I think? I know I'm moving into the dorm on Sunday. And I STILL need to get textbooks because so far, none of my teachers have put any lists up on Blackboard. This happened last year too, and I had a hell of a time getting my Spanish book because the campus bookstore kept selling out.

I actually have a pretty easy semester-- the only thing I'm worried about is French, especially since not taking a French class in Spring '09 means I'm kind of rusty. Also, I'm not quite sure it's EVER a good idea for me to do anything that involves the word "advanced". Especially if it's part of the phrase "advanced conversation".

Maddie: "Sorry." [spits out gum]

My Justice Studies professor says that the only way someone can really process or make sense of some of the most awful things in the world is to accept that evil people exist-- not just people who do evil things, but people who are absolutely, truly, unequivocally evil.

I couldn't disagree more.

... This weekend has been a little crazy. The battery on one of our cars died (yes, the same car that was badly damaged when Mom tried to back out of the garage with the trunk hatch still open-- we're not really sure whether or not the two problems are related). We took it in to have it fixed and found out that about $1,000 of the repairs wouldn't be covered by insurance. Sucks. BUT they gave us a rental car to use while ours was being repaired, and told us that if we liked it we could trade them at no extra cost. So we, quite unexpectedly, have a new car. It's a sky blue VW Beetle with a convertible top. It's EPIC.
We also bought a trampoline-- Jenny's wanted one for a while, and after going over to Sonja's house and using hers she decided that she needed one OMG NOW. So we had been pricing them all week, and we actually found a pretty good-quality one that wasn't very expensive. I'm more excited about the trampoline than the car, because apparently I have the maturity of a ten-year-old (but eh, I already knew that).
AND to top that all off, I got the last Pendragon book (because yes, I am still reading that series). Bobby looks middle-aged on the cover, y/y?

My summer class starts tomorrow, and I haven't been able to get any of the textbooks or materials yet. So we're going to Durham Book Exchange and/or Campus Bookstore tomorrow, and I'll do all the reading/preparatory work in the hours before class starts. FUN.

... I also had a dream last night that I was riding past the Durham shopping plaza on a moped (... seriously), and I saw Madame coming out of the DuMP and I was all, "OH YAY SHE'S NOT IN THE HOSPITAL ANYMORE 8D". But then I woke up and remembered that awwww, I still really have no idea how she's doing. Seriously, though-- that school has lost so many good teachers lately, for one reason or another. And Phetteplace and Herlihy are apparently retiring after this year. Phetteplace. Future generations will have no idea what it's like to have an escaped mental patient as a science teacher, and this makes me sad.

I have my last final tomorrow, and dorms close on Thursday. I'm dreading cleaning out my room more than I'm dreading taking the test, which is probably pretty dumb, but eh.

THIS IS THE LAST NIGHT I'M SPENDING IN MY ROOM, AHHHH. But I think I'm going to like Marston better, because the room I picked has its windows facing the woods instead of the traffic circle, so I won't have to worry about the screen getting popped out (... twice) by boys playing with frisbees on the lawn. Good times.

I should probably go to bed (not that it's all that late), but I'm not tired. I'll probably just waste more time on the internet like I've been doing for half the evening.

... Required science classes, that is. I took my Biology of Aging in-class final today-- no more walking to New Hampshire Hall at 7:30AM anymore! And I did the oral part of my Spanish final yesterday; it wasn't as bad as I had thought it was going to be, so that's good. Now I just have... three, I guess? And ughhhhh I still have so much reading to do for history; I have to finish three books. That's what I'm doing right now well, that and tagging at DramaDramaDuck and ignoring Discedo, VE, and [info]fire_lord_azula because there's an epic plot going on at DDD right now-- SORRY DX.

OH AND GMAIL, I HOPE THIS IS A LIE:

So at orientation they told us that freshman can only take four classes (sixteen credit hours) per semester-- no exceptions. But when registering for my fall semester classes for my sophomore year, why is it that I'm still limited to only taking four? I kind of want to email someone about this but I don't know who to aaaaaaask and eh. I really want to add on a fifth class if I can.

SO. For the one person that cares (... that would be me), here is my lovely schedule for next fall:

Advanced Intermediate Spanish
French Advanced Conversation and Composition
Beginner Elementary German
Juvenile Crime and Delinquency (an elective for my sociology major)

... I'M REALLY HOPING I GET AWAY WITH THIS WITHOUT SOMEONE COMING AND DELIVERING AT THE SMACKDOWN. But as far as I've seen there's nothing against the rules about taking three language courses, and I already have a bunch of my Gen Eds done thanks to this year (and the summer course I'm taking), and a lot of the major-specific required classes were at inconvenient times that would require me to either get up to early or walk uphill in the snow too much are junior/senior only (except for Stats, which I'll probably take spring semester). AND! I'd totally add on something else if I could! If I ever figure out who to talk to and end up being able to add on a fifth course I'll probably pick a Gen Ed. See? I'm ~*thinking ahead*~ and ~*being prepared*~ and ~*not leaving required courses till the last minute and ending up not able to graduate*~ like my adviser warned me that at least one person does each year.

And I am SO EXCITED to be taking German again.

On the way back from Spanish class today, I couldn't help but notice that the litter problem along whatever road runs in front of Kinsgbury Hall was much worse than usual. After seeing some of the more bizarre things that had been discarded in the gutter, I did what anyone would have normally done in that situation: wrote a haiku about it.

"Trash cans are for squares!"
It seems everyone thinks this

Sooooo I chose my classes for next semester last week. I'm taking Intro to Psychology, Beginner Intermediate Spanish, some modern-era history course that I forget the full title of, and Biology of Aging (y hello thar, attempts to fill up my science Gen Eds with non-lab courses!). So I'm dropping French, just because I'm kind of... done with it, I guess? Everything that comes after the class I'm in now (Advanced Intermediate) is literature and composition and/or major-specific, and I just feel like I can do reading and writing in French on my own (... which you know I totally will, because I'm that much of a dork). I'd probably get better at it faster if I were actually taking a course in it, but I've been taking it for four and a half years so I'm already at least familiar with all the grammar and tenses and so on, and I'm obsessed enough with languages that I'd rather take classes in ones that I don't know as well. (I-if that makes sense.) Which is why I was hoping to pick up Elementary German (if they let me; I'm not sure if having taken it in middle school would bar me from getting into the beginner's class even though I remember NOTHING except some random conjugations and the word for 'rabid') or Italian, but I decided to get some of my Ged Eds out of the way first- especially where science is concerned. I need three science courses (one in biology/chemistry, one in physics, and one in "technology"), and I'll be damned if I have to take a lab course (which... most of them are, and the ones that aren't seem to fill up quickly).

...

Wow, that definitely wasn't supposed to be so long. *uber-geek yay* But despite all this, I felt like such a slacker on Saturday when Margot asked me which ORHS classes looked good on a UNH application, and I had absolutely no idea. DX

OH. And this is kind of a sad thing to say after having been going here three months, BUT. I have finally discovered where the fruit is kept in Philbrook. It's across from the breakfast cereal and next to the all-day omelette bar thing, which is why I never saw it.

...

Shut up, it was exciting. I had strawberries.

So a demo version of this game was sitting on the table at the Pizza Hut I went to with Mom and Jenny last weekend. The name combined with the first quote on the box had us in hysterics. WE ARE SUCH PERVS. :|

But oh WOW, was Tuesday night crazy. They had a big election night party at the MUB (I didn't go because I was too tired, meh), and I was asleep from about nine or so till eleven, when Mom called and woke me up. At that point the insanity was really only just starting- people were whooping and screaming on their way back from the election party, and this girl in my dorm (I can't remember her name at the moment, ugh) came in and said, "They're running the streets!" Things calmed down after an hour or so, but then started up again the next morning. Heh.
(Obama also won 75% of the mock vote at ORHS. Oh, and Grant Chamberlain can apparently do a hilarious Sarah Palin impression. I would have paid to see that.)

Pffffft what else. OH. THE NEW SADDLE CLUB ISN'T NEARLY AS FUN TO MAKE FUN OF AS THE OLD ONE. I'm probably not going to bother mocking it much at all- I mean, they still have reruns of the old version on Discovery Kids and they're (unintentional) COMEDY GOLD.
Though I did notice that on the new season, they named Melanie's friend after that old-show actress that died. That was nice of them.

... I hate the new profile page. D: I'm still going to renew my paid account for one of my RP journals, though.

...

"I'm still going to renew my paid account of one of my RP journals" is probably the dorkiest sentence I've ever written.

Nothing much is happening right now.

Yesterday we trolled a Spanish-language dating website during Spanish class. It was kind of awesome. Sra. Hirsch created a fake profile and we helped her fill in "Elsita's" details (she has a PhD in entertainment and is interested in men 6'1l'' or taller, for example). If she gets any responses we'll read them in class.

But seriously, I haven't been doing anything. We ended up NOT being able to go look at Danes weekend before last due to some miscommunication with the breeder (and STFU, Firefox spellcheck- "miscommunication" is SO a word), so I don't know when we're going to try to schedule that again. And... I registered to vote a couple of weeks ago? I am now officially an Independent, because partisanship sucks. :D

Also, a note to the lovely people who reside in my hallway (none of whom read this LJ, but whatever): in the bathroom, there is a short silver lever near the top of the toilet. After you're done doing your business, push it down and see what happens. IT'S AWESOME. You really should try it sometime. <3

ETA: A little theory I just came up with due to the fact that there is something wrong with me. Nancy Drew = Avatar. Or rather, Nancy and her cronies = Ozai's Angels. For any of you who are familiar with both series, the evidence is clear:

Nancy (authoritative and commanding, good at everything, often forces her friends to do things that they don't want to do) = Azula.
Bess (ditzy, boy-crazy, hero-worship crush on Nancy, very easily forced to do things that she doesn't want to do) = Ty Lee.
George (secretly a man) = Mai.

DON'T KNOCK IT. IT FITS. =]

And the school newspaper interviewed Wally the Walrus. HEE! I'll have to transcribe some of it for posterity, because it's brilliant.
